Effects of Junk Food Persuasive Essay
Junk food is a slang term used to describe food that has low or no content of nutritional value. The food has high contents of fat, sugar, salt and calories. Junk food consists of such food as fried fast foods, snacks, gums, candy, and also carbonated beverages such as sodas. Highly processed foods follow under the category of junk. These foods are said to have little or no content of proteins, vitamins and minerals which are considered essential in body building. However, the definition of junk depends on the social class, with the rich who have greater access having a wider definition than the lowers class in the society due to accessibility.
These foods have thus been found to be bringing more harm than health to the bodies of the consumers. These foods do not contain the energy one requires for daily performance of his daily duties. They lack the content of energy required for one to do his work because consumption of junk leaves one fatigued. It affects the metabolism dropping the blood sugar level. This affects the blood supplied in the body and leaves one feeling tired.
The high accumulation of fats from the junk food causes obesity. The high accumulation of these fats in the arteries causes the arteries to thicken. This reduces the arteries capability to distribute oxygenated blood to the vital organ that is the heart. The reduction in the supply of blood to the heart may lead to failure of the heart; this can lead to a heart attack. Heart attacks have been rated as the highest cause of death in obese people. This happens due to the lack of enough blood supply to the heart.
The high accumulation of sodium and fats from these foods in the body can lead to the failure of vital organs such as the heart and liver. This is because the accumulation of fats in the arteries leads to the blockage of the arteries that supply vital oxygenated blood to the heart required for its functioning. The accumulations of these fatty acids in the liver cause it to fail in its functioning of filtering out waste from the body. The failure of any of the two organs in the body can cause sudden death, because their functioning is vital to the support of life in a human being.
Diseases such as diabetes are caused by the high consumption. The type of diabetes caused by high consumption of junk food is diabetes II type. It causes large deposits of blood sugar after the consumption of junk food that stimulates the high production of insulin from the pancreas to control the high level of blood sugar. The high production of the insulin leaves one craving for more sugar, thus a forced consumption of the junk food. This continues to a state when the body is unable to produce extra insulin to control the sugar level in blood. This leads to deficiency of insulin known as diabetes. Lack of enough insulin to control the blood sugar level can lead to increased levels of the sugar in the blood which is fatal.
Hypertension has been another fatal illness that has been associated with the excessive consumption of junk food. The dietary of the arteries increases the pressure used to supply blood to the heart. This increased pressure can lead to the malfunctioning of the heart. The increase in pressure can cause the bursting of the arteries or their fall in blood supply affecting the supply of blood to vital organs like the heart. This can be fatal due to lack of blood in the vital organs.
The brain is another vital organ in the body that is affected by the consumption of junk foods. A study by Paul Johnson and Paul Kenny in the institute of Scripps Research suggested that the effect that the consumption of junk has is addictive like the consumption of cocaine and heroin. This is because it stimulates the pleasure centers of the brain thus causing the body to demand more and more consumption that becomes dangerous. It happens because the fat deposits on the arteries supplying blood to the high demanding organ of oxygenated blood. This will cause the brain to fail, which if not rectified can cause death because the brain controls a lot of the body functions.
